ABOUT UPSTARTS
Upstarts is ICAD’s programme for early-stage design and advertising creatives who want to build their skills, grow their confidence and get closer to the industry.
Through workshops, mentorship, feedback and time spent with leading agencies and studios, Upstarts gives emerging creatives a real sense of how the industry works, and helps them take the next step in their careers.
The programme is also designed to make the industry more open and accessible, creating clearer pathways for creatives from underrepresented and marginalised communities.
Upstarts is made possible through the support of our Lead Partner, Core;Programme Partner, TBWA\Ireland; and Diversity Partner, DesignOpp. Together, we’re helping build a more inclusive and connected creative community.
Upstarts 2026 is now open for entries, closing on 7 August. Download the brief here, and enter here.

THE PROGRAMME
The Upstarts programme is made up of three key stages: workshops, agency and studio briefs, and a final showcase exhibition. From September through to November, participants build their skills, respond to creative briefs, receive feedback from industry mentors, and develop a body of work to share with the wider creative community. It gives early-stage creatives practical experience of how the industry works, while connecting them with leading agencies, studios and creative professionals.
BECOME A HOST
Upstarts is made possible by the agencies and studios who open their doors to the next generation of creative talent.
As a host, you’ll set a brief, welcome Upstarts into your agency or studio, and give them direct feedback on their ideas. It’s a chance to support emerging creatives, share your way of working, and help make the industry more open, connected and representative.
Each host agency and studio makes a financial contribution to help keep Upstarts free to take part in.

MENTOR AN UPSTART
Upstarts mentors play an important role in helping emerging creatives develop their ideas and build confidence in their work.
As a mentor, you’ll support an Upstart through the programme, helping them think through briefs, shape their ideas and improve their work. It’s a chance to share your experience, offer practical guidance and help someone take the next step in their creative leadership career.
Mentoring is designed to fit around your schedule, with support happening through planned calls and email check-ins.
If you’re interested in being a mentor, check out our Mentor Guide and apply here.
