Vodafone Comedy Carnival Galway: Laughter in the Eyre

Vodafone Centre Stage is a summer-long home for Irish festivals and the last event in the calendar is the Vodafone Comedy Carnival Galway, taking place in October as the nights are drawing in. Our challenge, therefore, was to combat Ireland’s festival fatigue by giving this unique event the voice it deserves.

There’s nowhere quite like Galway, and its comedy festival captures the essence of this bohemian city. So, we aimed to play on this by firstly delivering a line that signaled this through a playful pun on the square that would host some of its biggest shows.

There’s laughter in the Eyre.

To pay further tribute to the city that inspires the event, we created a hand-drawn aesthetic that reflects the creative heritage of Galway. Working with acclaimed illustrator Tobias Hall, we created circus-themed type and imagery to serve as a celebration of Galway’s legacy in hosting and inspiring entertaining feats of human endeavour.

Crucially, the illustration was built around a typographic rendering of the campaign line, ensuring that the call-to-action could be consumed at-a-glance. And this combination of detailed craft and razor-sharp clarity of message gave the campaign the flexibility we required across print and digital.

Great typography simultaneously conveys information and emotion, and that was the challenge that ‘There’s laughter in the Eyre’ rose to. And, with record-breaking ticket sales (over 20,000) it’s a challenge that we believe it met.
