‘Inspiration to last a lifetime’

Barry Connaughton shares his experience at the 2017 D&AD Festival

Back in April, we ran a raffle amongst Portfolio Lab ticket holders for a student pass to the D&AD festival. Barry Connaughton attended – this is how he got on.

‘I was lucky enough to attend the D&AD festival in April thanks to ICAD. The festival took place in Shoreditch London and was a 3-day celebration of creative excellence. And what an inspirational couple of days it was, with talks from over 150 speakers, featuring such creative heavyweights as Erik Kessels, Anna Higgs from the excellent Nowness, Colleen DeCourcy and Stefan Sagmeister. A particular highlight for me was a copywriting workshop given by the brilliant Vikki Ross as well as a great talk from a personal favourite, Mr.Bingo, titled the “37 things I’ve learned”. He was sure to make the point, one that especially resonated with me, that inspiration usually strikes when you are doing other things.

With the chance to view the 26,000 pieces of work that have been entered into this year’s D&AD awards up close and personal at your own leisure, this was a couple of days that have filled me with enough creative inspiration to last a lifetime.’
